Caring for Leather Car Seats

Leather car seats are a great luxury item. They look nice and they can add value to your vehicle. But leather car seats need a bit of extra TLC to continue looking great. We specialize in car interior repair in St Paul and the surrounding areas, so here are a few tips on how to keep your leather car seats looking as good as the day you bought the car.

One of the biggest rules to keep in mind about leather car seats is that, over time, dirt will build up on the seats. And because dirt is abrasive, it can scratch your car seats and lead to a dull finish. Ignoring this problem will only make it worse: the abrasions could eventually lead to your leather car seats cracking.

The best way to take care of your leather car seats and to avoid car interior repair is to go out and buy a leather cleaning product. These are widely available at most stores. You can get them in spray, wipe or lotion form, and there are plenty of leather conditioners available as well. Keep in mind that if your car seats are made out of perforated leather, you should not use the lotion-type cleaner. Also, do not use leather cleaners or conditioners that contain silicone. Make sure these products are naturally based, preferably with lanolin.

Do not use vinyl cleaners on leather. While this might be tempting if you have a bottle of vinyl cleaner lying around, it can do more harm than good. A vinyl cleaner could damage your leather seats and make them look too shiny, which could result in the need for car interior repair. Leather car seats should have a low-gloss look to them.

You should also vacuum your leather car seats on a regular basis: use a vacuum attachment and try to get as much dirt and dust off of them as possible. Then apply the leather cleaner following the directions on the back of the bottle.

There are also some day to day precautions you can take to avoid car interior repair. Keep sharp objects off of your leather seats, clean up spills right after they happen and call in a professional car interior repair service if you need help repairing rips and tears.
